Steam tends to patch a bit diffrently than the stand alone client, there are plenty of other posts here on steam about it, but any game that uses large singular game files will take longer than normal. This might seem like a stupid question but I don't get where games are stored from Steam. When you download a game where do the games get stored? Jump to content. My subreddits. Edit subscriptions. Where are games stored? Program Files Steam steamapps You can move Steam if you want to, you can launch games from within Steam. Steam examines the game folder, “discovers” the files are already there, and skips the actual download for any files it doesn’t need to retrieve from the server. Let’s say you want to download and install some Steam games, but your C: partition is full, you can then follow this tutorial, change the download location by moving some of your games to D: and create a symbolic link to virtually keep all of your games in the same place.
Short: What are symbolic links
Symbolic links are links that can point to actual files and directories. They can be used to copy an identical file/folder to another place on the hard drive without actually copying the file/folder. Handy if you want to save space.
Tip: If you’d rather not use symbolic links in Windows 7 you can also simply move the entire Steam folder to another directory, uninstall Steam, re-install Steam and choose the new directory. All of your games will stay untouched. Steam does NOT support having multiple download locations. This would be a rather nice feature. However, it is possible to virtually change the download location in Steam via symlinks. More below.
Tip for NON-techies: Before you follow this tutorial, you may want to consider downloading this freeware tool that allows you to create symlinks via a GUI (interface). For non-techies this will make it a lot easier I guess, although the syntax is very simple and you can learn it in 2 minutes below.
Move Steam Game(s) To New Download Location
1. Step Open up C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon and possibly C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamapps[email protected]
2. Step Figure out which games you want to move to (D:). You could use one of the free disk analyzer for Windows .
3. Step Actually move the games to D: or create a subdirectory for all your Steam games, e.g. D:Steamgames. This directory can have any name, but do not change the name of the actual game folder!
What we need to do is to create a hard link to a directory. In order to that we are going to use the command prompt command mlink.
Learn MKLINK Command Line Options Or Use Symlinker Freeware
You don’t need to know much about Mklink to create symbolic links in Windows 7. All you need to know is how to create hard links to a directory. Here’s an example:
mklink /D C:/path/to/symlink D:/path/to/realfile
Read this for more infos: mklink command and creating symbolic links in Windows 7
However, if you don’t like the command prompt, you can use this freeware tool to create symlinks via GUI:
MKLINK: Windows 7 GUI Moving Audiosurf Or Any Other Game To New Download Location
4. Step In this example I am going to move audiosurf to D: and create a symbolic link in C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon that points to D:audiosurf.
5. StepOpen an elevated command prompt. Then enter mklink /J “C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommonaudiosurf” “D:audiosurf” – Change the paths to suit your needs. Make sure that D:audiosurf or whatever game you copied to D: actually exists.
Final Tips:
Tip: You can delete the junction point (it will have a shortcut arrow icon) without deleting the actual folder.
Tip: Don’t forget to add the quotation marks to the filepaths or use relative paths after cd’ing to the path or you will get a syntax error.
Watch prime video offline pc. There are probably other ways how to change the download directory in Steam or Valve might add support for multiple download location in the near future.
Where Does Steam Download To
I want to buy a new notebook in the near future to play games on it. I'm looking forward for the new Steam for Linux client. My question is that where does the Steam install the games, on the home partition, or in the usr folder, or somewhere else? I do not use pre-release (i.e. beta) versions of either Steam or Ubuntu.

In newer versions of Steam, games seem to be located at:
~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common
Don't know when this changed, but Steam is no longer in
~/.local/share

The default install location appears to be
~/.local/share/Steam . This is where Valve games are installed by default, which can't be changed using the Steam Libraries system.
The setup of this directory mirrors how Windows Steam is laid out, with the
SteamApps folder containing both the .gcf files shared across Steam accounts and the individual steam account directories.

Where Does Steam Download Game Files Too Free
~/Steam is only for log files Downloaded data (client updates, etc) seam to go to ~/.steam instead.
If you don't want to pollute your $HOME, you can create a folder somewhere on a partition, give it your own user accounts's ownership and access rights and create some symlinks.
I personally did before launching the Steam Client second time:
After installing and updating the client, all game and Steam client data ended up under /opt/SteamFiles and installing games directly pointed me to my created file system.
This can easily shared between multiple Linux installations on the same PC.

As other users have already said, Steam is installed under
~/.local/share/Steam (where the ~/ means /home/<username> ). The games themselves are installed in ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common .
However, when I attempted to find this directory in Wine, for some reason Wine wouldn't show any folder names starting with a '.', so it couldn't find the
.local folder in order to get to the Steam directory. I was able to resolve this by going up in the directory tree to My Computer and then drilling down into the correct drive letter for your Ubuntu file system, which for me was Z: . Note that C: is an internally used drive letter in Wine for compatibility with Windows applications and won't show your Ubuntu files. From there you have to find your /home directory and follow the folders down to your Steam directory, i.e. Z:/home/<username>/.local/share/Steam .

It actually depends how you Installed Steam.(at least on 16.04LTS)
Via the steam.deb on steampowered.com the location ist ~/.local/share/Steam
Via ubuntu's own multiverse repository the location is ~/.steam
The second install method is the recommended one.http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/06/install-steam-on-ubuntu-16-04-lts

In my case I had a different place.
The best way to know (at least for me) is to go to the root and find for Steam or steam.
